at the InterContinental Carlton Hotel, in Cannes
May 21st-22nd, 2023

The Amazônia Fund Alliance Program officially launched with a powerful and inspiring Gala held during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, co-hosted by the Better World Fund. Hosted at the iconic InterContinental Carlton Hôtel, the event brought together a remarkable gathering of Indigenous leaders, global artists, and passionate advocates for the Amazon rainforest and its peoples.

We were deeply honored by the presence of an exceptional Brazilian delegation, including Sônia Guajajara, Minister of Indigenous Peoples; Célia Xakriabá, Member of the Chamber of Deputies; Chief Raoni Metuktire of the Kayapó people; Chief Tapi Yawalapiti of the Yawalapiti people; Osmar Ribeiro de Almeida Júnior, Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Social Development, Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger; Luís Otávio Palhari, President of BFUCA at UNESCO; and Carlo Linkevieius Pereira, CEO of the UN Global Compact Network Brazil.

The evening was elegantly hosted by actress Nadia Farès and musician Ghassan Yammine, and featured captivating performances by Arisa and the United Choirs. A dynamic Capoeira presentation by Amazonîa the Space of Life added a vibrant cultural dimension to the night.

In recognition of outstanding humanitarian commitment, awards were presented to Arisa, Liz McComb, Alic Chen, Larine Gros, Tom Volf, Ahmad Jamal, Enzo De Taranto, and Alok Petrillo.

Among the celebrity guests and dedicated creatives in attendance were Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, Fisher Stevens, Georges Tomb, Joanna Plafsky, Swan Sit, Richard Orlinski, Scottie Thompson, and Alvaro Núñez. The auction showcased an exceptional selection of contemporary artworks and photography, including pieces by Indigenous artists, in support of the program’s mission.

Looking ahead, the Amazônia Fund Alliance Program is committed to advancing a sustainable future through environmental protection and the preservation of Indigenous lands, cultures, and rights in the Brazilian Amazon.
